WIND & WEATHER
El Cuyo, Mexico has wind almost year-round for kiteboarding, however, the windiest season is from November through July; the peak of this wind (also the best months for kite lessons) is February to May. The daily wind is typically an afternoon sea breeze that gets accelerated by a localized thermal, and begins to blow by 10 am.
Most often the wind is side-on-shore from the Northeast direction. Typical kite sizes are 8m-12m for twin tip riding. While the months of November and December also have the typical side-on-shore winds, chances an El Norte wind blows in is higher than in the peak months. These winds are stronger, bring larger waves, and are often a bit on-shore, making riding for beginner kiters and students much more difficult. In the months of June, July, and August it can blow daily, often powered 12m winds, but in these months El Cuyo also experiences winds that are often lighter and more suited to foil boarding. (We also offer foil board lessons). Linked below you will find the forecasts for El Cuyo, Mexico, and the surrounding areas in the Yucatan Peninsula for comparison of wind strength.
